Custer State Park in South Dakota: Center Lake Campground & Custer, SD This week we are in Custer State Park in South Dakota on Center Lake at it’s campground of the same name. We had been trying for weeks to get into Custer State Park, but they would always say they were full. That morning, Bill tried one more time, and was given site #38 at Center Lake Campground. We found out later that’s because it’s the only campground that can only be reserved on the day you arrive. They call it a same day reservation. It’s basically like a first come first serve campground; except, you have to call in your reservation on that day. There weren’t any hookups, but that was OK by us since we have solar panels. We did get a scare one day because it began to hail. We just prayed that the hail would stay small and not cause any damage to our rig. We didn’t get any damage. Custer, SD itself is a small town, but it’s fun to walk around. Plus, we enjoyed our kayaking out on Center Lake; especially when we ran across the large shoaling of trout. The next two weeks, we will share with you our experiences on two beautiful scenic drives: the Wildlife Loop and Needles Highway. Amazing. We did get the kayaks out again on Sylvan Lake, and we visited the Visitor Center. We think you won’t want to miss those.
