Center Lake Campground - Custer State Park, South Dakota While the Two Tired Teachers will have four videos about Custer State Park and things to do in the area, this video is only about Center Lake Campground because several of its features are unique to this Custer State Park campground. The first of those unique features is that Center Lake Campground requires same day reservations. As soon as the reservation place started taking calls at 6 AM, Sharon was on the phone calling the 800 number. Before calling, maybe the day before, Sharon studied a map of Center Lake Campground, and she chose around 6 campsites that looked like they would be really good. When Sharon called at 6 AM, only 8 RV sites were available. The guy who took our call was not necessarily familiar with Center Lake Campground: he was at a reservation center somewhere in South Dakota. The reservation process is that you call the day you plan to arrive at Center Lake Campground. This is NOT a first come reservation. You must call. Inside the campground are phones are connected to the reservation center; you may use one of those, but in order to stay at Center Lake Campground, you must make a same day reservation call. You must occupy the campsite by 10 PM that same day or else you lose your reservation. When the Two Tired Teachers were at Center Lake Campground, it was $19 per night with no hookups. It sounds great; we stayed for 6 nights so it was only $114, right? Wrong! There is a reservation fee, a tourism fee, taxes, and a $20 usage fee for the park. All told, our 6 night stay at Center Lake Campground in Custer State Park was around $150. From about the 4 minute mark in the video until about the 5 minute mark, Sharon explains how you can get to Center Lake Campground and avoid the low narrow bridges. We stayed in the Upper Loop of Center Lake Campground in site 58, a gorgeous campsite. The only drawback is that you have to travel the wrong way on a one way road to be able to get your RV in the site. The reason we stayed for 6 nights in Center Lake Campground is its proximity to so many South Dakota attractions, including Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Hot Springs Mammoth Dig. It is also very near the towns of Keystone and Custer.
