Commodore 64 Longplay [071] Combat School (EU)

http://www.longplays.org Played by: Mad-Matt Combat school (Also known as Boot Camp in the US), Based on the arcade game by Konami, Converted to the Commodore 64 and other home computers and released by Ocean Software in 1987. “Before you save your country, you have to survive your sergeant. Atten-hut! Welcome to the marines. My name’s Sgt J.T. Tail Kicker, and while you’re here i’m gonna whip your scrawny hide into shape. You hear me, boy? Wipe that silly smile off your face, this ain’t no circus! Before you leave, your lungs will burn on the obstacle course. Your fingers will cramp on the firing range. Your muscles will ache during chin ups and arm wrestling. Your stamina will suffer in the iron man race. And if there’s anything left of you, i’ll give you a shot at me. Can you take it, boy? You better. Cause terrorists have attacked our embassy, and America’s depending on a real marine to save the day. So suck in that gut. And have a pleasant stay at Boot Camp.” Another one of those joystick waggling sports games. Well… at first. The first event is easy enough and the shooting range not so bad but when you get to the iron man race, the controls are almost nonsensical. I didn't intend to lose this race but it seemed a fitting way to show the 8th event, pull-ups which I did not show in the Spectrum longplay. This event is played as a punishment for failing an event. The arm-wrestling event was strange. It was quite difficult in the spectrum version but here it was possible to win in seconds. I dragged it out here for dramatic effect probably killing my score in the process. The fight with the sergeant is really annoying and barely lets you get any hits in. The spectrum version was hard enough but it was just silly here. He will land 3 hits on you almost every time he contacts you, Your only defense is to jump away, try to hit him then jump away. The final section is quite slow and thankfully very easy in comparison to the earlier part of the game. While I owned the Spectrum version back then, I’m playing the game through for the first time on C64. I have to wonder what is up with that title screen music as it's just ….bad. The go to response would normally and rightfully be emulation …. But I compared it with the original recording of the tune from Martin Galways c64 from the Project Galway cd set and while it sounds notably better, the song still sounds horrible. 00:00:00 Title screen music 00:02:25 Obstacle Course 00:03:05 Firing Range 1 00:04:00 Iron Man Race 00:05:53 Training 00:05:10 Firing Range 2 00:06:00 Arm Wrestling 00:06:45 Firing Range 3 00:07:40 Fight with Instructor 00:08:20 Save the Hostages
