Commodore 64 Longplay [123] Tetris (EU)

http://www.longplays.org Played by: MadMatty Tetris, developed by Andromeda Software and Published by mirrorsoft in 1988. “From the blasted plains beyond the Urals comes the most remarkable computer game yet. The same minds that produce chess champions have developed a cunning game that deceives through its simplicity. Teris is a new world from Russia. Tetris a totally original concept in gaming. Tetris addiction is just a game away. Play Tetris.” The development of this one is an odd one. Andromeda and Mirrorsoft released their version of tetris on all the 8/16 home computers of the time and all follow pretty much the same development mandate. Then there is the C64 version. It’s totally its own game and not following all the rules of the other versions. The are differences in number lines, line scoring and you can't turn off the ‘next piece’ preview. While other versions feature music by David Whitaker, the C64 version has a long 25+ minute track by Wally Beben and is the real star of the show and a reason this game will get loaded again and again. For this longplay I try play tetris and survive the full lengh of the music but I crumble a minute or 2 before the end, but not to worry as the music is continuous. Maybe my memory is failing me but I don't think the Vice 3.3x SID emu sounds as good as whatever I had back in the day. Forget about how bad I am at the game and just try to enjoy the music. I play on level 8 to stand some chance of making it to the end. Level 9 is a bit too fast and gives no time at all to spin or move when you get near the top of the screen. At the end of the video I play a quick round on Level 9 with Sound FX which are uninspired compared to the sfx in other versions. An obvious issue with the game is the flickering Tetriminos which can become annoying fast. Also moving the pieces can be a little sluggish as they drop faster than they can move left or right causing major problems once you get near the top of the screen. An interesting side note, I recall from the Spectrum version that there is a text scroller on the title screen that lists the games credits and then encourages you to go check out the C64 version for its awesome music! In that version the music loops like every minute which is quite distracting so is generally better to play with sound effects which are not bad actually. That said the game isn't all that playable. Who thought it was a good idea to set up as increase level(Speed) with no way to come down again. 00:00:00 Music playthrough on Level 8 00:26:05 Quickplay with SFX at Level 9 - Disclaimer: Most videos by World of Longplays use SaveStates!
