Written by Cesare Zavattini and directed by Vittorio De Sica in 1963, IL BOOM can easily be considered a peculiar film comedy of post-war Italy. Presented in the United States in 2017, more than 50 years after its release, the film has been described as something between Buster Keaton , David Lynch and Billy Wilder. A kind of very contemporary black satire of consumer society. Starring Alberto Sordi and Gianna Maria Canale, this is the story of a couple whose husband, Alberti, has gone into business for himself. Leading a lavish lifestyle and frequenting posh circles, he quickly gets into debt and is soon beset by financial difficulties. He tries unsuccessfully to borrow money from a major entrepreneur. Giovanni's wife, an elderly and rather ugly woman, offers him an unlikely deal: that Giovanni will exchange his good eye for her husband's glass eye... Part of the surreal atmosphere of the film is due to the original music composed and directed by Piero Piccioni. A strange and highly dynamic mix of different musical styles, including jazz and various popular dance grooves of the time, such as samba, twist, calypso and hully gully. A simple yet highly effective compositional technique based on elements that are both serious and funny. The original sequence you are listening to (+ 9 min) is entitled 'Samba Della Ruota'. It was Piccioni's first use of the samba in Alberto Sordi's films. A choice that would soon become a passion and a trademark for the great Italian comic actor.
