This NASA film shows the agency's many accomplishments in the year 1969. Four Apollo missions are included; Apollo IX, X, the lunar landing mission Apollo XI and Apollo XII. It also includes the Mariner VI and VII missions. The first section shows the Mariners VII and VI which were unmanned space crafts flown within 2,000 miles of Mars (:57). Both of these took photographs of the surface of the red giant. Images captured from the Mariner VII follow (1:28). A polar cap on the planet’s surface is zoomed in on (1:38). Two orbiting solar observatories (2:02); OSO V and OSO VI, are shown as they are launched (2:07). They are then filmed taking close images of solar radiations (2:17). An Orbiting Geophysical Observatory; OGO VI is seen (2:30). Sounding Rocket experiments follow (3:02) in Wallops Island, Virginia (3:02). This location serves as a training base for foreign technicians interested in space explorations (3:15). The weather satellite Tiros (3:25) follows to be used for an environmental science agency (3:30). The weather satellite, Nimbus III (3:51) collected measurements which were used to help map out the weather of the Northern Hemisphere (4:04). The ATS V (Advanced Technology Satellite 5) is shown. An image of Earth is captured in space (4:21). This satellite was to project educational television into thousands of Indian villages (4:29). Advanced research programs are shown. A nuclear rocket engine (4:50) is seen used for a landmark test at the Nuclear Rocket Development Station Nevada (4:58). This engine was brought to full power here for the first time. A specifically designed railway car was created to transport engines two and from the test stand (5:04). The control room is visited below ground (5:12). One small nuclear reactor produces as much power as the Hoover Dam (5:18). The film turns to the Flight Research Center in California (5:34). A NASA lifting body craft; the Northrop HL-10, (5:40) is seen attached to a US Air Force jet. The V/STOL was to able to make short city trips a reality (6:14). Issues which vertical landing planes might encounter during lift offs and touch downs are investigated at the NASA Aimee and Langley Research Centers (6:22). McDonnell Douglas works on a quieter jet engine (7:00). One of the approaches is depicted as acoustically treated engine covers (7:14). The first manned space flight in 1969 was Apollo IX with Rusty Schweickart, James McDivitt and David Scott (7:53). This was (8:00) used as a dress rehearsal for future missions. Rusty Schweickart EVA outside of the module for 45 minutes (8:32). The astronauts return from the mission (8:40). The Apollo X mission was to fly to the moon (8:51). Astronaut John Young is depicted flying solo with the module code named Charlie Brown (9:04). Other pilots of the mission were Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan. Pilots of the mission are seen flying in the lunar module Snoopy (9:13) as it makes close passes at the moon. The astronauts pass over the Sea of Tranquility (9:39). Mission Control Houston follows (9:45). Earth is viewed with the moon’s surface in the foreground (9:50). The astronauts of the Apollo XI mission (10:06) were Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins (10:06). These men were the first to land on the moon (10:41). Footage from the mission (10:46) was witnessed by three million. The men had to quarantine for three weeks upon return to Earth due to concern over contamination (11:05). Newly acquired lunar samples are inspected by scientists (11:16). The crew of this mission then took a 40-day goodwill mission visiting 22 countries (11:45) including Brussels (11:55), Mexico City (11:57), Bombay and Tokyo (11:59). Civilians greet them (12:08). For the second time in one year, astronauts headed to the moon in the Apollo XII mission (12:20). The Intrepid (12:31) moves towards its touch down on the surface of the moon (12:31). The landing craft touches down within 600 feet of the unmanned Surveyor III landed three years prior (12:43). Pieces of the Surveyor III were to be removed and inspected (12:54). Ninety pounds of lunar samples were collected by Charles Conrad and Alan Bean (12:57). Scientific experiments were set up on this mission which were to record moon quakes, measure the lunar atmosphere and to analyze solar winds (13:02). The splash down of Apollo XII (13:22) is seen in the waters with the aircraft carrier USS Hornet only three miles away.
