Kunduz is an important strategic position which is now surrounded by Northern Alliance-held territory and troops. Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, and Kunduz in the north are now the focus of Taliban strength. Taliban fighters from other areas have moved into Kunduz and are said to number between 20-thousand and 40-thousand, including a number of troops from Uzbekistan, Chechnya and Arab countries. Meanwhile, the Northern Alliance have been sending tank reinforcements towards the frontline in Chunzai, 25 kilometres (16 miles) east of Kunduz. In the nearby Northern Alliance-held town of Taloqan, soldiers attended Friday prayers at the main mosque before heading off to the frontline. The Afghan Charge d'Affaires in Germany, visiting Taloqan for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, said the Taliban didn't have any roots in Afghanistan and a strong push against the regime would see it fall.
