Various of explosions in distance from American bombing STORYLINE: Afghanistan's Northern Alliance continued its push towards the capital Kabul on Monday, as US B-52 bombers and F-18 jets maintained their assault on Taliban forces. Hundreds of well armed Northern Alliance soldiers are advancing along the main road from Jabal Saraj to Rabat where they are massing for an expected attack. Rabat village stands on the front line that crosses the Shomali plain around 25 km (15 miles) north of the capital Kabul. Northern Alliance forces have reportedly pushed the Taliban frontlines along the old Kabul road back by 10 km (6 miles). The reinforcements were accompanied by artillery. The sound of mortars filled the air near Rabat as Alliance soldiers pounded frontline Taliban positions. The move has increased the pressure on Taliban forces, which lost significant territory in the north of the country after three-day offensive by the Northern Alliance.
