PIANISTS! Auto Page Turning Step by Step! YOU CAN DO THIS! Pianist Duane Hulbert shows you how!

Pianists! You NEED to know this. Using an auto page turner is a game changer. Say good-bye to having to find someone to turn pages for you in a performance (and hoping they'll turn the pages in time). Forget having to play with one hand to keep the musical line going while you fumble to turn the pages yourself. In this video, Dr. Duane Hulbert will show you step by step how to use an auto page turning system. He'll tell you what you need to buy and tips on how to use it. For a non-techie, it's a bit complicated but as Dr. Hulbert can attest, it CAN BE DONE. Then there's no looking back. What do you need to buy? 1. (1:16) Buy an iPad. It doesn't have to be the latest model. It can be renewed. It can be any size. Dr. Hulbert started out with a 10.2 inch iPad which you can buy new for $269.95. Apple iPad (9th Generation): with A13 Bionic chip, 10.2-inch Retina Display, 64GB, Wi-Fi, 12MP front/8MP Back Camera, Touch ID, All-Day Battery Life He later upgraded to an Apple iPad Pro 2 12.9in (2017) 64GB, Wi-Fi - Gold (Renewed) Currently it's $449.99. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07... 2. (1:46) You'll need to buy some sort of a pedal system. Dr. Hulbert uses PageFlip Firefly Premium Bluetooth/USB Page Turner Pedal, currently retailing for $109.95. https://www.amazon.com/PageFlip-Firef... PageFlip puts out a YouTube video that demonstrates its product clearly:    • PageFlip Firefly Bluetooth/USB Page T...   3. (2:30) Buy a software program that will allow you to upload and store digital music on your iPad. Dr. Hulbert uses forScore. https://forscore.co/ It retails for $19.99. You can purchase it on the Apple App Store. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/forscor... 4. (2:54) Optional item to buy: An Apple pencil. This allows you to make notations on your uploaded digital sheet music. Dr. Hulbert bought this Apple Pencil (1st Generation): Pixel-Perfect Precision and Industry-Leading Low Latency, Perfect for Note-Taking, Drawing, and Signing documents. It retails now for $89.00. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01... 5. (3:30) Pair the pedal and pencil with the iPad. 6. (4:27) Upload the music. To find over 710,000 FREE scores, check out IMSLP (International Music Score Library Project) / Petrucci Music Library. https://imslp.org/ forScore also can scan physical sheet music. For a really excellent video on how to import music into forScore, check out Emma Blair's YouTube video:    • How to Use forScore on iPad for Sheet...   7. (7:50) Some tips for using the pedal. (8:50) Plan to turn the page a measure before the page's end. (10:00) Be sure to practice with the page turning pedal. It adds another significant element to your playing; your left foot has to be trained! (10:35) On slippery wood floors, consider using double-sided tape to secure the pedal to the floor. (11:00) Keep your iPad charged at all times! There are lots of good YouTube videos that give more information about using an automatic page turning system. Many of the creators are much more tech savvy than Dr. Hulbert. But, as he said in this video, if he can learn how to use this system, so can you. Good luck! Dr. Hulbert received his BA and MM from The Juilliard School of Music and his DMA from The Manhattan School of Music. Hulbert received the Gold Medal at the 1980 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, and also won prizes in the 1981 Leeds Competition and 1985 Carnegie Hall International American Music Competition. He has performed as a soloist with symphonies across the United States and has given recitals at Merkin Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Benaroya Hall in Seattle. In 2002, his recording of the piano works of late-romantic Russian composer Alexander Glazunov was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Solo Instrumental Recording. David Hurwitz of ClassicsToday.com called the CD “a production that makes the best possible case for this really excellent but sadly neglected repertoire.” Dr. Hulbert taught at the university level for over thirty years.
