I've done this modification twice in my 37 year locksmith career, the first was a double door with a unit lock on the active door. In that case the original fixed strike had an open back, which led to the idea. In those days it was a model 1003, but these days it's a 1006 which was selected as there are no active mechanisms or encumberances in the latch cavity area. This time the doors use an active Von Duprin mortise panic along with a vertical rod device on the inactive door. I think you can speed this conversion up by fitting two small metal angles to the interior using the factory provided screw holes, but here I used some hardwood material and worked out the details.
