Chateau Palmer 2020 Alter Ego Premium Wine Review

So excited to do my first review of the 2020 Bordeaux vintage. In general, the Margaux region wines are very approachable and they look to be stellar wines. Originally Chateau Palmer belonged to the much bigger estate of D’Issan. Once the vineyard was separated from D’Issan, it was soon known as Chateau de Gascq taking its name from its new owner, the de Gascq family. In 1800s it was sold to Colonel Charles Palmer and renamed Chateau Palmer. It has gone through a number of ownership changes since then but now the majority shareholders are the Mahler Besse and Sichel families, both of which are famous negociant houses. Alter Ego first produced in 1998, when Chateau Palmer purchased 8 hectares which is the heart of Alter Ego. Alter Ego comes from different plots than Chateau Palmer and has a different blend but he vinification of Alter Ego takes place in the same cellars and vats as Chateau Palmer. The same technical team is in charge as well. But Alter Ego uses less new oak during the aging period. On average Alter Ego is aged in 25% to 40% new, French oak barrels for between 16 to 18 months. Since it uses grapes from different plots, it is not a true 2nd wine but more like an Alter Ego or different expression of Chateau Palmer. The wine is supposed to be spontaneous, round, generous, silky, intense, light, rich and delicate. The blend of the 2020 vintage is 46% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon 50% and 4% Petit Verdot.
