Welcome to a magnificent ancient site. These are the remains of not just a Roman city, but also a Greek city. Emporion was founded some 2500 years ago, a typical Greek colony as there were so many in the Mediterranean world. Inevitably the Romans turned up. They turned one city into two, by building their own typical chess-board grid city next to it. And so for 400 or so years the city (or cities?) of Emporiae thrived.
