Producing Thin Wood Inlay Strips and Purfling Strips on the Band Saw (120)

In this video I will describing the production of multi-layer wood inlays for furniture building and also ultra-small multi-layer wood inlays commonly known as purfling for guitars and other musical instruments. I will be describing the complete construction of these multi-layer wood inlays on the band saw using the Accu-Slice system. I was able to produce precision multi-layer inlay strips as thin as 0.045” and with thicknesses as small as 0.050” on the band saw with no splitting of the layers and no chipping on the edges. The process begins with the accurate slicing of the thin wood strips at thicknesses from 10 to 20 thousandths of an inch thick on the band saw. These thin wood strips are then glued together to produce a 2” wide laminate wood strip with thickness of 0.045” and 0.075”. The thin wood laminate strip was then sliced once again on the band saw to produce the final wood inlays and purfling strips. I was able to produce finished wood inlay strips and purfling strips that were precise in dimensions and exhibited no splitting out of the thin wood layers. I was able to slice Purfling strips with 5 layers of 0.015” wood layers for a total 0.075”of an inch wide by 0.100” inch thick. I was also able to slice Purfling strips with 3 layers of 0.015” wood layers for a total of 0.045”by 0.100” thick. I also sliced a few thinner purfling strips that were only 50 thousands of an inch wide. So the smallest inlay or purfling strips that I was able to slice measured 0.050” thick x 0.050” wide x 36” long. In summary I was able to slice these perfectly straight ultra-small purfling strips on the band saw with no splitting of the layers or chipping of the bottom layer when sliced on the band saw.
