Mike Holcomb - Induction into the SGMA Hall of Fame (Class of 2024)

Mike Holcomb was born February 2, 1954 in Pickens County, Georgia and began singing in church at the tender age of four. By the time he graduated high school in 1972, he had already sung in local regional quartets, the Happy Harmony Quartet, as well as the Deliverance Quartet. Unlike most quartet men… Mike didn’t seek after the bass job with the Inspirations. On Labor Day in 1972 in Cumming, Georgia, Martin Cook sought him out. He had found his next bass singer! In fact, that day Mike was offered the job of a bass singer by 4 different quartets on the program! Little did Martin know that the 18-year-old bass singer would stay with the Inspirations for over 40 years and would be a part of a changing shift in the gospel music industry that started in Bryson City, North Carolina. The Inspirations rose to fame during their Gospel Singing Jubilee days and slew of number one hits followed. Beginning in November 1973, the group had the top song for 12 months in a row. “Touring That City” held the position through February 1974 and “When I Wake Up To Sleep No More” was the most popular song for the next seven months. “Jesus Is Mine” was also a number one song for the group in 1976. During their heyday in the 1970’s, the Inspirations were voted as Favorite Group in 1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1978. Mike’s booming bass voice was instrumental in their success. Mike was voted the Singing News Fan Award Favorite Bass Singer in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 2002, 2005, and 2008. The success of Mike and the Inspirations has been a blessing to the local community of Bryson City for years as The Inspirations always held their annual “Singing In The Smokies” there. The event would bring in singers for 18-20 straight days in the summer with every hotel and campground sold out for miles. Their influence has gone beyond the gospel music world as they have impacted those around them and their community, as well. Mike stepped away from the Inspirations in 2013 to focus on his calling as an ordained minister, and has continued to minister in song since 2015 with the Old-Time Preacher’s Quartet. With the rise of the “Young Inspirations,” the Southern Gospel world has been given a small glimpse of what things were like back in the 1970’s with the Inspirations. Mike is thrilled to join his long-time Quartet members, Archie Watkins, Martin Cook, and Troy Burns as he takes his place in the SGMA Hall of Fame. Mike was inducted into the SGMA Hall of Fame on September 24, 2024. *Music and video material used with permission from and provided by the Southern Gospel Music Association.
