Kelly Nelon Clark - Induction into the SGMA Hall of Fame (Class of 2024)

Kelly was born on December 1, 1959 in Atlanta, GA. Born into gospel music royalty with her Hall of Fame father Rex Nelon and The LeFevres. Kelly recorded her first song with The LeFevres at 13 years old and started singing full-time with them at 16 years old. She continued singing full-time for 46 years. Kelly’s first solo with the Rex Nelson Singers, was the iconic song “The Sun’s Coming Up.” Kelly was the first artist to appear on the first full-color cover of the Singing News magazine in May, 1983. That year, Kelly released her first of three solo albums for WORD music, which led her to finalist nominations for the Dove Award Category “Inspirational Album Of The Year” as well as “Female Vocalist Of The Year.” In 1985, Kelly appeared on “The Praise In Us - A WORD Family Praise Album” along with Steve Archer, Russ Taff, David Meece, Joe English, The Imperials, Gordon Jenson Kathy Troccoli, and Terri DeSario. Kelly was the only “southern gospel” artist on this landmark recording, representing the entire genre of Gospel music to a new audience. This album went on to win a Dove Award for “Album Of The Year” in 1985. One year later, Kelly’s recording “Praise Him Now” was the first totally digital recording by a Gospel artist. There were no CD manufacturing facilities in the US at that time, so they had to be imported from Japan. 1987 saw Kelly as the featured vocalist and performer in the Nelons' Dove Award winning concept music video for their single “Famine In The Land.” The concept video field was in its infancy in Nashville, once again proving Kelly was ahead of her time. Throughout the 80’s, Kelly was a featured performer and host of the GMA Dove Awards, as well as a host with Bill Traylor and Rusty Goodman on “America Sings.” This show was created and produced by Glenn Daniels, who later started CMT once again proving Kelly was an integral part of moving the music industry forward. In 2016, Kelly and the Nelons were inducted into the GMA Hall of Fame. Kelly was previously inducted into the GMA HOF with the LeFevres. Kelly has won numerous other awards in the industry, including being selected “Favorite Female Vocalist” and three “Favorite Alto” in the Singing News Fan Awards. Kelly was inducted into the SGMA Hall of Fame on September 24, 2024. *Music and Video content provided by and used with permission from the Southern Gospel Music Assocation.
