Dry Tower project example: Automated storage of opened SMD component reels

The storage of component reels within an SMD production line is a great challenge for electronic manufacturers. Efficient storage, combined with controlled climatic storage conditions and complete traceability can lead to enormous savings potentials and quality improvements. With 18 SMD lines and a huge warehouse of 3700m, German electronics manufacturer Smyczek has to store 180.000 component reels on site. Now the material logistics in the SMD production are automated step by step. In the project shown in the video, all opened reels (approx. 6,000 reels) are stored in Totech's automated storage system, the Dry Tower - as well as another 10,000 reels from the main warehouse, thus covering most of the production material requirements. After the reels are first unloaded, they are stacked on a trolley and then fed into the Dry Tower. The logging and storage process is fully automated from this point. On the retrieval side, Totech developed a completely new and unique solution: The rolls are stacked in an upright container. This ensures that when a batch is retrieved, every reel is accessible to the operator.
