History Is Lunch: Charles McLaurin, James Meredith, and Flonzie Brown Wright, “Mississippi & MLK”

On April 4, 2018, Charles McLaurin, James Meredith, and Flonzie Brown Wright presented “Mississippi and MLK,” about their experiences with Martin Luther King Jr., as part of the History Is Lunch series. While enrolled as a student at Jackson State University in 1961, Charles McLaurin heard Dr. King speak at the Masonic Temple and was inspired to join the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. In 1964, McLaurin organized a visit to Greenwood by King to support the Mississippi Summer Project. After becoming the first African American student to successfully enroll at the University of Mississippi, James Meredith planned to walk from Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi, to promote black voter registration and defy entrenched racism. When he was shot by a white man on the second day, King traveled to Mississippi to march alongside thousands of others through to the Mississippi State Capitol. During the march, King called on Canton resident Flonzie Brown Wright to help line up food and lodging for the 3,000 people on the march. Wright became the first African American female elected official in Mississippi post-Reconstruction. History Is Lunch is a weekly lecture series of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History that explores different aspects of the state's past. The hour-long programs are held in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum building in Jackson. MDAH livestreams videos of the program at noon on Wednesdays on their Facebook page,   / mdahofficial  .
