History Is Lunch: Thomas Watts, "A Mississippi Town Called Terry, 1867-2017"

On March 28, 2018, Tom Watts presented "A Mississippi Town Called Terry, 1867-2017" as part of the History Is Lunch series. Terry is an incorporated post-town in southeastern Hinds County named for William David Terry, one of its early residents. The first records of settlement near the town date to 1811. A sesquicentennial committee consisting of local citizens that was formed in 2016 tapped Watts to oversee the creation of a book recounting the town’s story. “This volume tells the history of the area before Terry was established as well as the story of the people and events of the last 150 years,” said Watts. “Terry is unique in ways, but it is also like so many towns that dot the map of Mississippi.” The history includes the sagas of local heroes who served in armed conflicts dating to the War of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans to the stories of blues musician and Terry native Tommy Johnson, longtime resident and former Mississippi governor Albert G. Brown, and wealthy entrepreneur W.H. Tribbett. Tom Watts, a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Southern California, and the National Defense University, is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army. After 28 years of active duty, Watts returned to Mississippi to teach American history. History Is Lunch is a weekly lecture series of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History that explores different aspects of the state's past. The hour-long programs are held in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum building in Jackson. MDAH livestreams videos of the program at noon on Wednesdays on their Facebook page,   / mdahofficial  .
