The name Oyakodon literally means chicken and eggs over a bowl of rice. Oyako translates to “parent and child” referring to the chicken and egg. Don, short for donburi, refers to the type of deep bowl that is used for okyakodon. Or oyako donburi. Donburi also refers to these types of dishes that use a deep bowl of rice with other ingredients on top. Other examples include katsudon and gyudon. Oyakodon combines tender chicken thighs with fresh eggs, and an umami rich, dashi based sauce poured over a bowl of fluffy white rice. It is easy to make and will surely be a hit in your home.
