यह मंदिर प्राचीन शहर स्थानेश्वर के इष्टदेव शिव को समर्पित है , जिसे वर्तमान में थानेसर शहर या कुरुक्षेत्र शहर के नाम से जाना जाता है। थानेसर के वर्धन साम्राज्य के संस्थापक पुष्पभूति ने अपने राज्य की राजधानी का नाम स्थानेश्वर शिव के नाम पर रखा था। मौजूदा मंदिर का निर्माण रघुनाथ राव पेशवा ने करवाया था । यह मंदिर भगवान शिव का समर्पित है और कुरुक्षेत्र के प्राचीन मंदिरों मे से एक है। मंदिर के सामने एक छोटा कुण्ड स्थित है जिसके बारे में पौराणिक सन्दर्भ अनुसार यह माना जाता है कि इसकी कुछ बूँदों से राजा बान का कुष्ठ रोग ठीक हो गया था। शिव महापुराण में इस स्थल का वर्णन मिलता है। जिसमे लिखा हुआ है की एक समय भगवान विष्णु जी और ऋषि दधीचि में युद्ध हुआ जिसमे शिव भक्त दधीचि की भक्ति की विजय हुई तथा विष्णु जी को अपने अहंकार को त्यागना पड़ा विष्णु जी और ऋषि दधीचि ने जिस छेत्र में युद्ध हुआ बही स्थान आज स्थानेश्वर के नाम से प्रचलित है ।[1] स्थाणु शब्द का अर्थ होता है शिव का निवास। इसी शहर को सम्राट हर्षवर्धन के राज्य काल में राजधानी का गौरव मिला मंदिर के अन्दर छत पर आज भी प्राचीन कलाकृतियाँ विद्यमान हैं। इस मंदिर में भगवान शिव का शिवलिंग अति प्राचीन शिव लिंग है। यह मंदिर दो भागों में विभाजित है। बाईं ओर भगवान श्री लक्ष्मी नारायण जी का मन्दिर है और दाईं ओर भगवान शिव का मन्दिर है।पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, पांडवों और कौरवों के बीच महाभारत युद्ध आरम्भ होने से पूर्व पांडवों और भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने इस स्थान पर भगवान शिव की पूजा की तथा महाभारत का युद्ध विजय का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त किया था।इतिहास के अनुसार यहां सिखों के नौवें गुरु तेगबहुदुर जी भी आए थे। इस मंदिर के समीप उनकी याद में गुरुद्वारा नवीं पातशाही भी बना हुआ है। Sthaneshwar Mahadev, Kurukshetra, Mahabharata, Indian history, Hindu temples, ancient temples, Sthaneshwar temple, Mahabharata history, incredible facts, religious sites, pilgrimage, historical places, Indian culture, mythology, Lord Shiva, sacred places, Hindu mythology, Kurukshetra tourism, temple architecture, spiritual journey This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the ancient city of Sthaneshwar, now known as Thanesar or Kurukshetra. Pushpabhuti, the founder of the Vardhan Empire of Thanesar, named the capital of his kingdom after Sthaneshwar Shiva. The present temple was built by Raghunath Rao Peshwa. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the ancient temples of Kurukshetra. There is a small pond in front of the temple, about which according to mythological references, it is believed that a few drops of it cured the leprosy of King Ban. This place is described in Shiva Mahapuran, which states that once there was a war between Lord Vishnu and Rishi Dadhichi in which the devotion of Shiva devotee Dadhichi won and Vishnu had to give up his ego. The area where the war between Vishnu and Rishi Dadhichi took place is today known as Sthaneshwar.[1] The word Sthanu means the abode of Shiva. This city got the honor of being the capital during the reign of Emperor Harshvardhan. Ancient artifacts are still present on the roof inside the temple. The Shivling of Lord Shiva in this temple is a very ancient Shiv Linga. This temple is divided into two parts. On the left side is the temple of Lord Shri Lakshmi Narayan Ji and on the right side is the temple of Lord Shiva. According to mythological stories, before the Mahabharata war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas began, the Pandavas and Lord Krishna worshipped Lord Shiva at this place and received blessings for victory in the Mahabharata war. According to history, the ninth Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur Ji also came here. Near this temple, Gurudwara Navin Patshahi is also built in his memory.
