Our search for Seldom Seen Slim takes us to Tonopah, Nevada where we uncover the birth of the town and seek out evidence of Slim in its early mining days. From the Tonopah Mining Park to the earliest residents in Tonopah Cemetery, we continue to ask "Has Anyone Seen Slim?" We traveled the desert Southwest from Calico, California to Tonopah, Nevada where we sought out evidence of what life in the early mining days was like for early Tonopah settlers such as Seldom Seen Slim. The silver-rich area was discovered in 1900 by Jim Butler and named Butler after him. Before the rush of more prospectors came, much of what the town would have looked like was a simple settlement of crude wood cabins and canvas tents that could be quickly constructed. While at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park we explored an example of what one of these looked like and what conveniences these early settlers would have had at their fingertips. Butler leased out claims to other Tonopah area miners and these men became known as the Leasers. The Tonopah Historic Mining Park is a wealth of information about the start of Tonopah giving visitors a chance to explore the Mizpah Mine's headframe, hoist house and walk around peering into some of the deep stopes. These relics are some of the closest evidence of life in Tonpah's early days. Within the Pioneer Cemetery, located next to the very unique World Famous Clown Motel, is the Old Tonopah Cemetery where some of the pioneers from Tonopah's past are buried, even as far back as 1901. Signage and a pamphlet located at the gate provide more details about life in the mining days. From victims and a hero of the Belmont Mine Fire to other tragic accidents and violence, one can really get a sense of life in Tonopah, Nevada. After all that exploration one can stay at the historic Mizpah Hotel where the contrast from a boom town tent city to a thriving community can be felt. Tonopah's Mizpah Hotel features a bar, restaurant, historic elevator, and casino all in a rich and lavish Victorian style.
