The Newshour Debate: Delhi University's American style course rolled back - Part 2 (27th June 2014)

In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Prof Anil Jha, Member, Academic Council, DU; Dr Savita Jha Khan, Asst Prof, Delhi University; Bhupinder Chaudhry, Treasurer, DUTA; Sumaira Nawaz, Second Yr Student, English Honors , St Stephen College (Under FYUP); Nupur Sharma, Member Natl Exceutive, Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha; and Abid Rasool Khan, Spokesperson, Congress -- discuss the issue of Delhi University dropping the controversial 4 yr undergraduation course finally on the directions of the UGC, and whether the Univ compromised students' interests over their own egos by dragging the issue too long. Under pressure from UGC to act on its directive, the Delhi University today scrapped its controversial four-year undergraduate programme and reverted to the previous three-year structure. "In line with the directive of the UGC, the University has decided to roll back the FYUP. Consequently, the admission process shall be conducted under the scheme of courses that were in force in the academic session 2012-13 in all the colleges of the University of Delhi," DU Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh said. The decision puts an end to the uncertainty over the admission process for 2014-15 which was triggered due to the stand-off between DU and UGC over FYUP. Over 2.7 lakh students have applied for admission to more than 54,000 seats in 64 colleges of the varsity. The admissions were to begin on June 24 but have beendelayed due to the stalemate. With Delhi University rolling back its controversial four-year undergraduate programme, celebrations broke out in the campus today as students and teachers danced, burst fire crackers and sang songs. Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA), ABVP, NSUI, SFI, KYS and others, who had been carrying out a long-drawn-out protest against the four-year course, celebrated their "victory" and thanked the University Grants Commission (UGC) for intervening in the matter. Students seeking admission to theundergraduate programme in Delhi University may have to wait for a few more days with a newly-set up panel of principals being asked to devise the modalities for admissions. A 12-member committee of college principals was set up by the university today to look into the issue of admissions under the three-year format.
