Beach Blast F-22 Raptor and F/A-18F Super Hornet 2024 NAS Oceana Air Show

The USAF F-22 Raptor Demo Team and the US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet of the East Coast Rhino Demo Team join for a very rare formation photo op at the 2024 Beach Blast! Shot on Saturday, September 21. Beach Blast is a tradition for the NAS Oceana Air Show in which some of the air show performers will fly over the Virginia Beach waterfront at dusk. The pilots and personnel of the US Navy Blue Angels take to the stage at Neptune's Park, and almost always, one of Oceana's F/A-18s tears up the sky in full afterburner. This year, the F-22 Raptor Demo Team also joined the fun! Skydive Suffolk opens the event with an evening jump with pyrotechnics, landing on the beach in front of Neptune Statue. Then, the F/A-18F Super Hornet and the F-22A Raptor join up for a very rare cross-branch formation flight. I've been doing air shows for my entire life. This type of formation flight is truly a rare sight, and I'm so glad to have been able to see it. After the formation flight, the two jets separated and did some flybys in full afterburner. The sun had just about completely set at this point, so the only thing you could really see were the burners and the nav and strobe lights. If you look very closely, you can see some vapor contrails being illuminated by the F-22's afterburners. The F/A-18F Super Hornet is from the VFA-106 Gladiators stationed at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The USAF F-22 Raptor Demo Team is based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton Roads, Virginia, just across the James River from Oceana. The F-22 demo pilot is Captain Samuel "RaZZ" Larson. Enjoy!
