Kieseritzky Gambit | King’s Gambit Opening Theory

The Kieseritzky Gambit, which Spassky famously used to defeat Fischer in Mar del Plata, is the strongest continuation for white after g5, the Classical King’s Gambit Accepted. This is the first video which covers g5, black’s best response to Nf3, the King’s Knight Gambit. It’s a very natural move, defending the extra f4 pawn and simply asking white where is his initiative and if the sacrifice was justified. After g5, which is far more straightforward than the other defense we’ve been looking at, white has to react immediately. If white plays slowly, black will have time to reinforce his kingside pawn structure, solidify the f4-g5-h6 pawn formation and simply be a safe pawn up. This is why white immediately strikes at the pawn chain with h4! H6 now doesn’t work because the rook is hanging on h8. Therefore black’s best try is g4, advancing the pawn and chasing the white knight off of the f3 square. White has options, but Ne5, the Kieseritzky Gambit is the most precise one. After Ne5, black has two main responses and three (sort of weak) sidelines. The two most popular defenses are the Berlin Defense, which leads to a superior position for black in all lines, and the Kolisch Defense, which seems far more playable for white. 5...Nf6 Berlin Defense 5...d6 Kolisch Defense 5...Qe7 Rosenthal Defense 5...h5 Long Whip 5...Bg7 Paulsen Defense My conclusion is that white is fine in every variation except for the Berlin. I believe that 5...Nf6 is a great defense for black and that, if black knows his theory well, white will seldom be able to equalize. Of course, the opening is double edged and sharp so both sides are bound to blunder at some point, but banking on that fact alone seems risky. I would recommend to play the Kieseritzky Gambit with great caution! #chess #kingsgambit
