EATING UNPASTEURISED CHEESE - Vacherin - La Retorta - Saint-Marcellin , and Saint Vernier

Hit SHOW MORE for a full index of the cheeses, their descriptions and their tasting! Today I'm looking at some heavyweights in the olfactory department. I've got some of the stinkiest cheeses you're likely to find in the supermarket so let's find out if their bark is worse than their bite. Remember that you shouldn't be eating unpasteurised cheeses if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, are very old or very young, or have your immune system compromised in some way. If in doubt, check with your doctor! First up, I have Saint Vernier, an incredible washed rind cheese from the Jura region of France. Made with the milk of Montbéliarde cows, this gorgeous little cheese is washed in local wine from the region. Next, Saint-Marcellin; a cheese made with unpasteurised, or raw, milk from cows in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. This great little cheese comes in a cute little earthenware dish, perhaps for presentation, perhaps to attempt to hold the smell in! Third to be tasted in one I've tried for you before; La Retorta from Extremadura in Spain. It's a very different but equally smelly cheese made with the raw milk from Merino sheep. Merino are most certainly a wool breed so it's great to see their milk being used for such a wonderful product. Additionally, the milk is also curdled using rennet derived from the globe artichoke. Finally, an exclusive and heavyweight cheese in every sense of the word. The beautiful Vacherin. This Vacherin is from Doubs in France and has been made by the Badoz family since 1830 in the mountain village of Pontarlier. This cheese is only made in winter when the cows don't produce enough milk to make Comté, an absolute favourite of mine. Please drop me your comments below. Have you tried any of these cheese? Are there some great cheeses you'd like me to try?
