In the summer of 1941 an underground organization of public figures formed in Bratislava; it became known as the 'Bratislava Working Group'. This group originated in response to the policies of the head of the Jewish Center (Ústredna Židov or ÚŽ), Arpad Sebestyen, who unhesitatingly obeyed the Slovakian authorities. The Bratislava Working Group, was devoted to rescuing Jews. The group's efforts, however, came to naught and most Slovakian Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.
