Return of the Connolly Column

FIBI would like to thank everyone who contributed to such a fitting tribute to the members of the International Brigades at the Workmans Club in Dublin on Friday November 23, 2018. The musicians gave so much of themselves and their talent to make this 80th commemoration of the return of the Connolly Column such a special occasion – from the very first moment everyone lucky enough to be there realised this would be a night to remember. So, a huge thank you to Colm Morgan, Mick Hanley, Donal Lunny, Tony Sweeney, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, John Faulkner, Andy Irvine and Gallo Rojo. Also to Justin McCarthy for his poignant narration of Charlie Donnelly's The Tolerance of Crows. A huge thank you also to everyone who bought tickets, to those who bought merchandise too and to those who could not be present but still sent donations. People travelled from all over Ireland and beyond to be there. The proceeds from the night, which was completely sold out, will ensure our work will continue to prosper and remain relevant. There is so much work to be done but we will never have more inspiring people than those who defended the Spanish Republic. Perhaps the only sombre note in what was a celebration of anti-fascist resistance was the recognition that many of those who gave everything in Spain would perhaps never realise their legacy would be so cherished, their names forever remembered. But we do remember them now more than ever they have become an inspiration for this and future generations of people who recognise the dangers around us and the complacency that allows fascism to become somehow acceptable. In the immortal words of La Pasionara’s farewell address to the brigaders read out at the concert: "Today many are departing. Thousands remain, shrouded in Spanish earth, profoundly remembered by all Spaniards. Comrades of the International Brigades: Political reasons, reasons of state, the welfare of that very cause for which you offered your blood with boundless generosity, are sending you back, some to your own countries and others to forced exile. You can go proudly. "You are history. You are legend. You are the heroic example of democracy's solidarity and universality in the face of the vile and accommodating spirit of those who interpret democratic principles with their eyes on hoards of wealth or corporate shares which they want to safeguard from all risk.
