“The Children of the Nation” working people’s poetry from Ireland

Song by Maire Mullen Launch of “The Children of the Nation” - Working people’s poetry from Ireland in Connolly Books, Dublin, on 23 November 2019, to a packed venue, with people queuing outside. This is the first anthology of its kind in Ireland. It is published by Culture Matters, a British based cooperative promoting socialist and working-class writing, highlighting the voice of those who are excluded by and large by mainstream culture. It is a significant gesture of solidarity with the Irish working people. The anthology is supported by the Irish Trade Union Movement, in particular by FÓRSA, UNITE, CWU, MANDATE, and the Belfast, Dublin and Galway Trades Councils. Eoin Ronayne, Deputy General Secretary of FÓRSA addressed the gathering, as did Mike Quille of Culture Matters and editor Jenny Farrell. The main speaker was Fr Peter McVerry, outstanding representative of the homeless in Irelanad. Over forty contributing poets were present and very many of these read a poem from the book. To name some of them would mean to exclude others, and this would not be in the spirit of our venture.
