Douglas Reeve at the Dome Brighton Concert Organ - 4 September 1953 at 6pm (BBC Light Programme)

Douglas Reeve (1914 - 1999) was one of the UK's top names in the cinema or theatre organ world. Douglas commenced his broadcasting career from the first BBC Theatre Organ installed in St George's Hall, Langham Place on 28/4/1937; he was 19! He was a native of Brighton and was invalided out of the forces in 1941 and returned home. Douglas approached the Dome management and was engaged to play for dancing and other events on the Wm. Hill & Son, Norman & Beard Ltd Concert Organ. This instrument was built in 1935 for the corporation and was designed by Stanley Roper (St George's Chapel Windsor) and Quentin Maclean (Trocadero Cinema, Elephant & Castle, London). Douglas was soon appointed Borough Organist and his weekly programmes, which commenced in the 1950s 'Tuesday at the Dome' became an institution. This broadcast has been transferred from an acetate disc, probably made by Derrick Marsh of Deroy Records. It has been treated with careful use of the Sonnox Restore Suite to remove many unwanted noises in the recording. Douglas was a charming man and his dry witty humour was much enjoyed by his fans and other concert goers. His playing on this broadcast is exemplarily in every way.
