Die casting for coffee machines – In this video we will explain how a component for a coffee machine is produced and which technical solutions we have adopted in order to achieve a perfect chrome finish. This product constitutes the lower section of a coffee machine for the consumer market. It is an aesthetic component: it is indeed visible and touchable by the end-user and has therefore specific technical and quality aspects to take into account. In fact, due to the particular shape of the product, during analysis phase we have faced some technological and process critical issues that could have compromised the requested standards. The component is indeed characterized by a peculiar shape that did not allow us to work the inner surface: for this reason, after a series of analysis on the process and of considerations on the shape of the product, we have decided to work in order to obtain, during the casting phase itself, a surface suitable for the chroming process. With the aim of achieving this result, we have conducted different activities of simulation and virtual and physical prototyping: thanks to these efforts we have reached the definition of the most appropriate parameters for the production of the component. As a matter of fact, mostly thanks to simulation and prototyping we have understood that we should have focused mainly on two properties, roughness and superficial quality, trying to take advantage of production parameters in order to achieve, already during casting phase, the expected outcome. To obtain superficial roughness, directly during casting phase, we have adopted the solution of the lapping of the mold in the production phase whereas, as far as superficial quality is concerned, we have again resorted to simulation with a view to modifying the mold and test it again in production in order to achieve the requested standards. The technical solutions adopted, with the modification of the parameters, have thus allowed us to obtain a product suitable for polishing and chroming processes. At first, raw components undergo polishing phase, during which the exterior surface of the product is smoothed in order to allow the good result of the following chrome plating treatment. Chrome plating is a galvanic process that is both aesthetic and protective: it indeed gives to zinc components an aesthetically appealing aspect, similar to the surface of a mirror, and at the same time it protects them from corrosion. Products are immersed in tanks disposed in sequence where they undergo different processes: degreasing, copper plating, nickel plating and chromium plating. It is exactly the last phase of the process that gives to the products an extremely bright appearance, thus supplying them with an important added value that makes them a distinctive element in coffee machines.
