Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons of Whidbey Island. Whidbey Island is located in the Puget Sound region of Washington state, and is accessible by ferry or bridge. If you are considering moving to Whidbey Island, there are a few things you might want to consider. You should also consider the cost of living, which can be higher on the island due to its location. Finally, it is important to be prepared for the wet, cool weather that is common in the region. Pros 1.- Weather- The summers on Whidbey Island are absolutely fantastic! No rain for months, moderate temperatures. If you love playing outside and on the water Whidbey Island might be the best place for you to call home. 2.- Seafood- Penn Cove Mussels and Dungeness Crab The world famous Penn Cove Mussels come from Whidbey Island. They never tough the seafloor so they are definitely the cleanest and tastiest of mussels in the world. Along with the awesome mussels Whidbey Island is also known for it's Dungeness Crab. This crab beats all other crab (just ask anyone on the island.) The locals go nuts during crabbing season- we eat eat this crab straight out of the ocean and quite often cook it directly on the beach. 3.- Outdoor Parks, Fort Ebey, Fort Casey, Deception Pass State Parks, Fort Ebey State Park. Whidbey Island is well known for all the outdoor areas that are open to the public. https://whidbeycamanoislands.com/ 4.-Critters-Insects, Snakes Whidbey Island is sparse when it comes to poisonous spiders and snakes. We only have only resident snake, the garter snake. Poisonous spiders are also just as few. As far as I have seen we don't have the black widow or the recluse. 5.- Airports- Everett Paine and Bellingham Whidbey Island has two airports within an hour. The Everett Paine that is to the south of Whidbey Island and Bellingham to the Northeast. Both are great smaller airports that are less busy with cheaper parking. Flights can be more expensive that Seatac https://www.painefield.com/ 6.-Taxes- No income tax, lower real estate taxes No income tax makes a lot of people happy in Washington State and on Whidbey Island. Yes, weather can be on my Pro and Con list! I don't like rain and the lack of sunshine can really get people down. Seasonal depression can really be a thing for people coming from the sunshine states. I do have a lot of clients tell me they are tired of nonstop sunshine and are ready to soak up the rain and cool weather. 2.- Noise- NASWhidbey, noise map The north end of Whidbey Island has a naval air station located outside of Oak Harbor. The growlers have been known to make some noise. You should checkout the noise map and the flight schedule so you can hear and see the jets yourself. https://whidbeycamanoislands.com/jets... 3.- Seatac- long distance for less expensive flights Seatac is over two hours one way on a good day. This distance makes the journey quite a long day especially if you are flying to Florida or Hawaii with different time zones. 4.-Winter storms=power loss. Buy a generator. Fireplaces can be a must to keep warm in the winter. When I bought my house I had a wood burning fireplace installed day one. It has kept us warm on many days when the power was out. https://www.usclimatedata.com/climate... 5.-Small roads- two lane roads = slow traveling in the summer and slow in the winter when trees are down. Whidbey Island gets a moderate amount of visitors during the summer months. Our small highways will be bumper to bumper for several months. We have frequent accidents due to travelers being in a hurry and trying to pass in non passing areas. Overall Whidbey Island is an absolutely delightful area to live or to just visit.
