Image Fight II: Operation Deepstriker is the sequel to the first Image Fight game released in the arcades in 1988. Image Fight II is a vertically scrolling shooter only released in Japan by Irem for the NEC PC Engine Super CD-ROM. The game was later available on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console platform, which I am playing here.In 2023, it was included in the Irem Collection Vol.1 retro gaming release for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series. Where do I begin with this game...If you thought the first game was tough, then you are in for surprise, because this is even harder if that can be believed. Firstly the fact that you are playing a vertical shooter in horizontal mode restricts your movement and it feels very claustrophobic. It does not help that your ships hit box is huge. The movement feels all over the place and inaccurate. Now for the really hard part, that is the bosses, I mean really, it's a miracle I made it past the first boss eventually, the second boss, I just gave up, though I'm sure with practice the pattern can be learnt, but it won't be easy. Positives, the voice acting is great, the music is a fantastic modern rendition of the classic chip tunes in the original game, and the graphics and cut scenes are pretty good. I would say the first game is better but maybe I could learn to like this one, it will take a lot of time and effort, I also recommend getting a very good controller for this one.
