CAA Congress 2024: Leigh Parker - Altruism in Paramedicine context matters

Following a background of working in ambulance as an Intensive Care Paramedic, Clinical Educator, and as a lecturer in undergraduate paramedicine, Leigh moved to Australia in 2012, taking-up a position with the University of Tasmania. As a senior lecturer Leigh teaches undergraduate paramedicine while working toward completing a PhD. Altruism is the act of doing for others, without self-gain but at a cost to self. Altruism is associated with compassion and the attitudes and attributes of caring and can result in improved wellbeing and health. It is important to consider how paramedics in Australia are educated in the craft of paramedicine; the human interaction associated with altruism, compassion and caring. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of altruism within the undergraduate paramedicine content, to identify patterns in communication and to determine the occurrence of selected concepts. A content analysis of online written paramedicine educational materials was conducted using words associated with altruism, compassion, and caring as identified by a preparatory scoping review. The content analysis included units coordinated by the University of Tasmania School of Paramedicine and related to clinical practice (i.e.: where patient engagement is expected and explored). The results suggest that many words associated with altruism, compassion and caring, can be used multiple ways and/or are subject to variations in interpretation. The essential premise of educational materials can be understood, or misunderstood, by the learner depending on word choice, sentence construction and an individual’s understanding of the word itself. In paramedicine education context is important. Educators should clarify the meaning and context of words within educational materials used, to ensure that altruistic behaviours are taught and understood.
