CAA Congress 24: Leigh Parker - Altruism in Paramedicine

Following a background of working in ambulance as an Intensive Care Paramedic, Clinical Educator and as a lecturer in undergraduate paramedicine, Leigh moved to Australia in 2012, taking-up a position with the University of Tasmania. As a senior lecturer Leigh teaches undergraduate paramedicine while working toward completing a PhD. Altruism is the act of doing for others, without self-gain but at a cost to self. Altruism is associated with compassion and the attitudes and attributes of caring. Unlike medicine and nursing, studies of altruism in paramedicine within Australia are limited. A scoping review was conducted to ascertain the availability of data related to altruism in paramedicine. Key words included were: Altruistic* OR caring OR mindfulness OR “above and beyond” AND ems OR emt OR ambulance AND officer OR paramedic* OR emergency AND medical AND service OR emergency AND medical AND technician. The scoping review process identified 742 articles, reducing to 27 after duplicate removal, screening, and full text review. There is a paucity of data related to altruism in paramedicine; where data was identified it generally arose from European settings particularly those where ambulance crew was nursing based. Changes to paramedic scopes of practice, crewing arrangements and workload may influence the practice of altruism and associated behaviours such as compassion and caring. Acts of compassion and caring help to ease negative patient experiences, reduce vulnerability and when coupled with a patient focus led to mutual trust. Paramedicine is a complex and sometimes conflicting profession where paramedic-patient engagement matters. Paramedicine requires practitioners with a significant and varied skill set. This skills set involves flexibility and order, speed and slowness, adaptability, and the ability to make sense of quantities of information while tailoring care to the individual. Future patients will be best served by an undergraduate paramedicine curricula that is well-rounded.
