It use to be that class lectures were the assumed practice but with the advent of new research in the past 30 years, the lecture appears to be among the least effective tools for student learning. And yet, we continue to fight about the efficacy of the lecture. Heimler's thesis is as follows: the lecture is a very specific tool that can do a very specific job, and if it's used for THAT job, then it is magnificent. Should we lecture in our classrooms, or should we rely on student self-discovery tools like Harkness Discussions or group work or project based learning?
