The Muiderslot - nowadays also known as Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot - is one of the most famous castles in the Netherlands. The square castle with its characteristic round corner towers and moat was founded by Floris V. shortly after 1285 and restored from 1895-1910. The New Dutch Waterline, of which Muiderslot is a part, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 26 July 2021. Muiderslot is located on four Dutch waterlines: the Utrecht Waterline, the Old Dutch Waterline, the New Dutch Waterline and the Defence Line of Amsterdam. All these waterlines were built to defend the country. By flooding parts of the country in a controlled manner, the enemy could not get through. The New Dutch Waterline is a 200 kilometres long and was built between 1815 and 1940. In total, the New Dutch Waterline consists of 96 forts, dikes, locks, pumping stations, canals and polders, as well as two castles: Loevestein Castle and Muiderslot. World Heritage sites are cultural or natural monuments that are unique and irreplaceable.
