It is similar to そうに・そうなbut げis much more restricted with what words it can be paired with. It is usually used to describe things like one’s emotions or state of being, whereas そう can be used with more general things like weather, climate, atmosphere etc. 寂しげ:looks lonely 悲しげ:looks sad 楽しげ:looks to be having fun 満足げ:looks satisfied 不満げ:looks dissatisfied 言いたげ:looks wanting to say 買いたげ:looks wanting to buy 自信ありげ:looks having confidence 興味なさげ:looks having no interest 自慢げ:boastful The げ form turns the い adjective into a な adjective; alternatively it can be followed by に and used as an adverb. 彼女は寂しげな顔をしている。 She looks lonely. In this example げな describes the expression on the girl's face - the adjective 寂 しい (lonely) has been modified to function as a な adjective: 彼は不満げに何かをぶつぶつ言っている。He is mumbling something dissatisfactory. In this example げに modifies 不満(dissatisfied), so that it functions as an adverb. 外に出ようとすると、うちの猫は悲しげな声で「ミャー」と鳴く。 When I try to go outside, my cat meows in a sad voice. このプロジェクトは部長の意見に従って行われたので、彼はとても満足げだった。 This project was done according to the director's opinion, so he looked very satisfied. 彼は自慢げに、自分の娘がどんなに優秀であるかを親戚中に語った。 He boastfully told all his relatives how brilliant his daughter was.
