Menopause Conversations - Ep 58 Research and Equity in Menopause - Tina Backhouse (GM Theramex UK&I)

Welcome to this episode of Menopause Conversations with my guest Tina Backhouse - General Manager UK & Ireland Women's Health at Theramex It was great to talk with Tina about so many aspects of women's healthcare - something we have a shared passion for and having myself been in the pharmaceutical industry in the mid 1990's.. it was interesting to chat about the fall out for a generation of women as a result of those early HRT studies such as WHI - Women's Health Initiative in 2002 that looked at the risks and benefits of Estrogen Plus Progestin in healthy post menopausal women. We now now that the study findings have been debunked - which didn't help people like my mum who were denied HRT for more than a decade. So today's conversations was one of hope as Tina talked about why despite what people think... menopause isn't a saturated conversation and it is by no means being over medicalised when just 16% of all menopausal people in UK are accessing HRT. This means 84% or 11million women ARE NOT getting access to HRT and there is a postcode lottery being played out. We talk about the HRT prescribing patterns uncovered by the Theramex research which shows women in affluent areas are 30% more likely to get offered modern preparations of HRT unlike their non-white counter parts who are not given the same choices when it comes to HRT. In fact you're more likely to be offered older preparations of HRT rather than patches or transdermal gels etc. We also know that societal considerations are not factored in to giving women more choice. We know that 1 in 5 women over 50+ years are unpaid carers and so access to healthcare becomes even more inaccessible when you dont have access to education and knowledge that might be given to those working in large global organisations. People on zero hours contracts, working for SME's or full time carers or disabled - just wont have access to the same standards of care as a white middle class women in London or Winchester for example. Tina gives some really great insights as to how we get greater equity for women in all aspects of healthcare and the role of the new healthcare Hubs which are designed to streamline women's health. Tina's purpose for this research and future research projects is clear: 1) to open up the conversation and ask 'are we treating everyone fairly'? 2) The trajectory on Women's Health Strategy needs to change - we need to see even more action 3) The women's health hubs need greater investment now - and not having funds diverted into paying off debts in ICB 's (Integrated Care Boards). An allocation of £1 per woman is woefully inadequate. 4) and no conversation would be complete without taking about why we in 2024 we still find ourselves having to fight for an equality around women's health - so the Patriarchy, Misogyny and the dismissal of women's health are also up for discussion in this episode. Tina is such a force for good and has an unwavering level of optimism about what's possible - my kind of woman! Here what she hopes we can achieve in the next 5 years - and its rooted in ensuring that we make progress for those who are NOT currently being served by the current systems of women's health. Tina is an open book when it comes to ideas and in her words : she loves conversations with people because you never know where the next good idea is going to come from.
