LBS Roofing Membrane & Batten Installation

Roofing Membranes or underlays act as a secondary line of defence in keeping your roof watertight against the elements. LBS supply a range of roofing membranes which are fully breathable and this allows for condensation to escape through the roof. The typical roll size is 50m by 1.5m, with other roll sizes available on request. When fitting a roll of membrane, start by rolling it out across the roof horizontally allowing for a nominal 10mm drape between the rafters. This will allow any rain or moisture to flow down the slope of the roof and into the gutter, preventing it from getting trapped behind the battens. Roofing membrane should be fixed onto the rafters with non-corrosive membrane tacks. When laying subsequent rows of membrane ensure you are maintaining the correct minimum overlap of 150mm. This is usually highlighted by drawing a checked line along the edge of the roll of membrane. When fitting the roofing battens, it is important that they meet the requirements of the relevant standards and that they are appropriate for the span of your rafters. LBS recommends the use of 50mm by 25mm roofing battens for most of the roofing products in the LBS range. Please consult with the LBS technical department for specific guidance. Once you have checked the correct spacing and gauge for your selected roof covering, you must fix the battens into place with the correct nails. The most recent code of practice for slating and tiling recommends that the nails for fixing battens into rafters should be non-corrosive, 3.35mm in diameter and the nail should give a minimum of 40mm penetration into the rafter. A nail length of 65mm would therefore be recommended when fitting a 50mm by 25mm roofing batten. When using the LBS continuous metal dry verge trim, it’s good practice to allow the edge of membrane to fold back over the face of the roofing batten to give added protection from moisture.
