Alhambra for solo Trombone and Concert Band

“Alhambra” for solo Trombone and Concert Band This trombone Concerto is a commission work for 2021 Asia and Pacific Band Directors’ Association by Tainan Symphonic Band. The Alhambra Palace has been a precious Islamic heritage in Spain. It was listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, and one of the most beautiful forts in the world by National Geographic Magazine. The palace is magnificent with its exquisite workmanship, built with a mixture of Moorish and Andalusian architecture style. It has been the most important and stunning Islamic architecture in Spain. The Alhambra Palace, which means “the red fortress” in Arabic, was located in Granada, south of Spain in the 13th century. It was the mosque and fortress constructed by the Moors when they were in reign. The fortress also served as the palace for the Moorish dynasty. The music starts with a majestic statement of the brass and dazzling quick notes of the woodwinds to give the impression of the magnificent Alhambra Palace and Sierra Nevada. Followed by the flute solo of Arabic tune, the music moves toward its marching period. It suggests the time when the Moors crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 711 BC, making the landing on the Iberian Peninsula. The expedition carried on for eight year and the Moors conquered most of the territory of Spain today, and began its reign on the peninsula for seven hundred years. The Islamic culture reached its golden age in economy, art and culture. The trombone and the concerto band’s bright and vivid statement in this marching movement best describe the golden era. The theme moves onto the harmonic Adagio following the virtuoso of cadenza. It presents the extreme beauty of the gardens and sculptures in the palace, where light and shadow casting through the engraved window panes. The warm sound of the trombone makes its best statement here. After the adagio, war scenes are presented by the intensifying notes. The trombone makes its virtuosos here to suggest the reestablishment of the Catholic force, making a threat to the Moor Dynasty. On January 2nd, 1492, Granada, the capital city of the Moors, was besieged by the Castilians. The Moors were forced to convert to Catholic or leave Spain. Legend has it that as the last ruler Abu Abdallah Muhammad XII went into exile, he reached a rocky prominence where he gave a last view of the city, Granada. He sighed with great sorrow on his turnback. The melancholic lento expresses the sorrow and sadness of the Moors on their leaving, and the music moves toward the finale. The quick tempo in the finale is a statement of glory, victory and festivity. The Reconquista declared its success. The Alhambra, the last Muslim fortress on Iberian Peninsula finally surrendered to the new Christian Spanish Empire. The golden period of the Islamic rule which lasted nearly eight hundred years reached its end. This concerto will give its world premiere on November 13th, 2021 in Tainan Municipal Xinying Cultural Center, with Mr. Kuo Lien-chang conducting the Tainan Symphonic Band and Mr.Tsai Yi-Wen on trombone solo.
