Fragments

FRAGMENTS (on themes by Franz Liszt) is a work for Brass Band and Percussion, the first extended piece I’d ever written for the genre despite it being my whole world for the best part of 35 years. Whilst I was in the midst of arranging Liszt’s funeral poem, Héroïde Funèbre, I became fascinated by the manner in which his themes portrayed the interplays between darkness and light. I became drawn to the idea that fragments of Liszt’s music could be woven into a work which was more optimistic and joyful whilst retaining the solemnity and darkness of the original source. The resultant score is a tone poem in 3 sections and played as a contiguous piece. It is a tour de force for bands asking many questions of the individual players and particularly for the soloists. It has been so long since I composed this piece that I’m unsure about which parts are my own and which are Liszt’s although a couple of parts are taken verbatim from the original most notably the flugelhorn solo halfway through the 2nd section. I hope that you enjoy this music. If you do, please leave me a comment or if you have any constructive criticism, please also leave a comment. Ken Ferguson
