Building an Experimental Airplane, The Vans RV-7A | EP2.14 Ailerons

Ailerons! From start to finish. Building the ailerons was a bit of an undertaking--not as easy as I thought they might be. All familiar things, after building the elevators: stiffeners attached to a folded skin that must be final bent to shape to mate to a spar. And the usual drilling, deburring, priming, and more deburring that goes with these things. The ailerons have a long steel pipe running the entire length to act as a counter balance, and have a pre-bent leading edge (whew!). Ends are comprised of ribs, and hardware mates up with the recently installed hinges on the rear spar of the wing. The ailerons are a critical piece of any airplane, controlling the roll axis of movement. They're the second-to-last control surface of my experimental airplane build, followed only by the flaps to make my Van's RV-7 complete with regard to flying and control surfaces. ------------ I'm Ryan, an aviation enthusiast who has decided to build his own aircraft and publish the entire process online for others to watch along. The airplane is a two-person experimental kit built aluminum plane capable of over 200 miles per hour, and a range of over 700 miles. The kit is manufactured by Van's Aircraft, one of the most prolific kit providers on the planet. The airplane is aerobatic, functional, and fun. The build is challenging, time consuming, fun and rewarding. Check out my instagram @ryanflyspdx Also check out my new website, ryanflys.com.
