Retirement tips

It seems like everyone wants to be retired, but no one wants to be old. But the concepts are unavoidable paired together. Retirement is literally a time when you pull-back from the work-world. It can be the best time of your life, but it also necessarily includes the aging process. But despite the reality of mortality and limitations of age, retired people report the highest levels of happiness of any age group. And here are some tips to help make this happen. First, enjoy the liberation of acceptance. Built into our generation is an expectation and obligation that we make the world a better place. We believed we could change the world. Gun violence, drug addiction and wars will not end in my lifetime. That’s depressing, but it is also liberating. The world is not going to change in your lifetime, so you might as well get out there and enjoy the world that is, instead of pining for the world you want it to be. My Second tip comes is to “punch out.” You are retired. You are not defined by your job. Time is no longer the most essential commodity in your life (that’s health). Enjoy the opportunity for a new pace and approach. Take off your watch. Next, re-calibrate time. You don’t need to be at the office before eight. You can take the time to talk to the interesting person at the coffee shop. In fact, you do not really need to be anywhere at any certain time today Slow down: i lived my working life driving ten miles an hour over the speed limit, both literally and figuratively. When I retired, I slowed to the speed limit, and it felt great. Slowing down creates a peace and joy of its own. You are retired, you are no longer in a hurry. But, don’t be surprised that your tasks expand to fit your schedule. Finally, realize that you are not as important as you thought you were. Embrace the retirement lifestyle. Some people make fun of retirees for going to a matinee, hitting dinner at 4:30pm for two specials and two waters, and pulling into the garage before the sun sets, but having done this myself, I think it is great. Monitor and balance your indulgences. Now, Neil Young sang that it is better to burn out than to fade away, which sounded fun, but as a retiree I have a different perspective. I would prefer to fade away. You should live your life the way you want to, but do monitor the degree to which you indulge yourself. However, since you only have from now until sunset, also follow this bit of wisdom, “This above all: to thine own self be true.” The next tip is a small one, but an important one, talk, but not too much. I often have to smile when I start talking to a younger person and see the fear in their eyes that I will embark on a long story that they will have to listen to out of respect for my age. My recommendation is that you reduce your message to an elevator speech. Retirement is the time to get your stuff together. First, draft your advance directives and health care decision making documents. Second, see and attorney and have a will, trust or other estate plan that will transfer your assets to whoever or whatever you think deserves them. Since we are addressing mortality head-on, make plans for your final disposition Two things go into everyone’s retirement tips, that is have enough money and prioritize your health. There’s plenty of commentary about money, to which I would like to add just one tip, you are not dead yet. You are not frozen into a single retirement plan and as long as you have your health, you have the flexibility to adapt to a changing economic environment. Make health your number one priority, and repeat it to yourself until you treat it that way. Almost every set of tips includes intensifying your relationships with family, friends, church or community. It is a personal choice, but I say the opposite. I say “chuck them,” or some similar word. Pulling back from social engagement is a natural part of the aging process, and if that happens to you like it happens to me, then don’t sweat the small stuff. To thine own self be true. My next tip is recognize that time flies. Think of an old car with a manual transmission that you put in neutral when coasting down a bit hill. It really goes fast. When you are over the hill and picking up speed, time really flies. Drawing on this, if you want to make something happen, make plans and put the plans into effect now. There is no time like the present and the future is uncertain. This is your life, your retirement and your time to make things happen. Finally, in closing, my biggest tip, Celebrate life! Despite the challenges, older people, I mean retirees, report the highest level of happiness of any age group. Get out there and live!
