Is it IN or or is it OUT? Let's discuss out of bounds plays.

This is Rule Review covering plays involving out of bounds. This video is dedicated to educating basketball officials on recognizing how, why and who caused the ball to go out of bounds. Watching actual videos of plays involving out bounds, along with some basic instruction explaining each rule, helps officials learn faster and retain rule information better. We can all learn together by continually discussing the rules as they are written in the NFHS rules book and viewing actual high school basketball games reinforces that learning. Because out of bounds is a simple concept it gets very little attention in training and learning the rules of basketball. Because of this, many times, out of bounds plays are incorrectly called because the simple concept everyone understands, is made more complicated by introducing specific rules written to help sort out uncommon situations that can catch many officials off guard. This is what we will be reviewing in this segment of Rule Review. And remember, all video clips we reference to highlight out of bounds plays are from high school games and focus solely on the NFHS high school rules book. Video #1 An errant pass hits an official near the sideline and bounce back onto the court where a player gains control and makes a fast break the other way. Is this fair? Why wasn't there a whistle? Video #2 A shot bounce high off the ring and over the backboard. The officials stop play before a rebound can even happen. Is this a stoppable situation or is it a play on? Video #3 A player tips a ball and keeps it from going out of bounds but after his momentum makes him step out of bounds, the official sounds his whistle to stop play after that same player touches the ball again in bounds. Video #4 The ball flies out of bounds after several possible deflections and after the ruling officials signals the direction of the ball for the throw-in, his partner comes in to discuss for a possible change in ruling. Watch this one carefully to find out if this situation was handled properly. Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but true education and learning can more effectively be attained when each video is annotated with diagrams and shading to point out key teaching points. The Officials Institute, and the Rule Review segment, creates videos that don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right. #outofbounds #basketballrules #basketballvideos For more videos by the Officials Institute subscribe to this channel    / officialsinstitute   OR click the following video links Technical Fouls - Rule Review    • Technical fouls, techs, T's or what e...   5 Play Challenge - Out Of Bounds    • How many of these out of bounds plays...   Live Meeting - Legal Guarding Position    • Let's review some video on Legal Guar...   You can also find us on our website https://officialsinstitute.org/ Join our group on Facebook   / officialsinstitute   All rules referenced in this video are taken from the official rules book provided by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
