This is another Rule Review segment covering plays involving jump ball situations. This video is dedicated to educating basketball officials on the proper way to look at jump ball plays, including primary responsibilities of each official. Watching actual videos of jump ball plays helps officials learn faster and retain rule information better. We can all learn together by continually discussing the rules as they are written pertaining to jump ball restrictions and reinforce those rules by applying them to actual high school basketball videos. In this segment of Rule Review, the four jump ball video clips we reference are all high school games and involve different aspects to improving your jump ball administration and your jump ball mechanics. Video #1 The primary responsibilities of each official during a jump ball toss is covered first with who watches what. A good tossing technique needs to start high enough to help keep the jumpers from knowing when the toss will start. Starting too low can give a smart jumper an advantage by timing out the toss. Make sure the toss is throw just high enough, beyond where the jumpers can reach so ball will "drop between them." The jumpers must wait to touch the ball until it has reached it's highest point so seeing the ball dropping is an excellent cue for the Umpire 1 to look for when determining this restriction. The referee needs to slow down and wait for all players to pass him before moving to his normal primary coverage area spot. Video #2 Non jumpers must not change positions before the ball has actually left the officials hands, according to Rule 6.2, which is what happens here. The player changes position before the ball is tossed in an attempt to fool the jumper and retrieve the tipped ball. Umpire 2 is responsible for watching all 8 non jumpers but more specifically where they are in relation to the 36" deep restraining circle. To reiterate from the last video, the referee needs to slow down and wait for all players to pass to avoid running into or blocking a player moving into the front court. Video #3 When this jump ball happens, both jumpers touch the ball, and one jumper touches the ball with two hands simultaneously, which is considered 1 touch. But then the ball falls to the floor ending the jump ball. Normally when the jumper catches the ball, its a violation, but since the jump ball ends, so do the restrictions of the jumpers making this a legal play. Video #4 In the jump ball play, one jumper simply jumps higher than the other to tip the ball to his teammate, but looking closer we find he illegally held the other jumper restricting his ability to get any higher. The Referee, or the tossing official, is responsible for watching the action of the jumpers and instead of admiring his toss, must focus lower on the bodies of the jumpers in order to see this foul. In this situation, since the alternating possession arrow has not initially been set, after awarding a throw-in to the offended team, the arrow should be set toward the opponents basket once the ball is at the disposal of the thrower. Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but true education and learning can more effectively be attained when each video is annotated with diagrams and shading to point out key teaching points. Taking away and remember specifics on a rule such as the jump ball is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand. The Officials Institute, and the Rule Review segment, creates videos that don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not.
