Episode 3 of the Northridge 30th Anniversary Webinar Series: The Northridge Earthquake – 30 Years Later – A Catalyst for Engineering Resilient Communities ** Series Partners: • American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Infrastructure Resilience Division • ASCE Los Angeles Section • Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Southern California Chapter • Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEOASC) • Earthquake Country Alliance (ECA) - led by the Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC) at USC ** Episode 3: 30 Years of Progress in Quantification of Seismic Hazards There has been an exponential progress in the quantification of seismic hazard since the Northridge Earthquake. In this webinar, after a brief review of the status of seismic hazard assessment in the 1994 era, an overview of the progress in our understanding and quantification of ground motion and fault rupture hazards will be presented. One major development in the direction of seismic hazards research in the last 30 years has been the initiation and expansion of a series of large community-based research programs on earthquake hazards. These non-traditional collaborative research initiatives have resulted in major advancements in our understanding and modeling of geohazards, and with a wide spectrum of impacts on various issues in earthquake engineering. In this webinar two examples of such large community-based programs, NGA ground motion research series and fault displacement hazard initiative, will be overviewed along with their current status and directions. ** Presenter: Yousef Bozorgnia Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, & Director, Natural Hazards Risk and Resiliency Research Center (NHR3), UCLA Yousef Bozorgnia is a professor at UCLA Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and the Director of Natural Hazards Risk and Resiliency Research Center (NHR3). Dr. Bozorgnia’s decades of experience and expertise include earthquake engineering and ground motion hazard, with emphasis on multidisciplinary aspects of earthquake science and engineering. He has extensively published scientific papers on earthquake ground motion models, seismic hazard analysis, and earthquake engineering. Dr. Bozorgnia is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in the State of California and has been a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) since 1998. Dr. Bozorgnia has been the Principal Investigator of multiple phases of the NGA seismic hazard research programs. In 2019, EERI, COSMOS and SSA jointly awarded Bozorgnia with the Bruce Bolt Medal for his extensive contributions to seismic hazard analysis and earthquake engineering. In 2023, Bozorgnia was awarded the UCLA Public Impact Research Award for his decades of impactful research contributions. This webinar will be followed by others throughout 2024 exploring with greater detail what happened during the earthquake, how it impacted infrastructure, the socio-economic impacts on the effected communities, and what has been done since or is planned to reduce future losses and improve our resilience.
