On December 22, 2003, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook the Central Coast of California at 11:15 am, centered 7 miles northeast of San Simeon. At the time it was the most damaging earthquake in California ($250-$300 million) since the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Two people died as they ran outside a building and its façade fell onto them. ECA Central Coast held a special webinar to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this earthquake, on December 19, 1-2pm. The webinar presented the science of what happened, reviewed the immediate response and major impacts, and shared how the region recovered. The agenda and speakers are listed below.
