Amtrak Northeast Regional

Welcome aboard Amtrak Northeast Regional Train #190 the weekday train from Washington Union Station to Boston South Station! Today we will only be traveling on the Northeast Corridor section of track between New Haven, Connecticut, and Boston, Massachusetts. Our train is lead by ACS-64 locomotive #600 named "David L. Gunn" the very first ACS-64 locomotive delivered to Amtrak in June 2013. Our stops along the way today will be Old Saybrook, CT; New London, CT; Westerly, RI; West Kingston, RI; Providence, RI; Westwood-Route 128, MA; Boston Back Bay, and Boston South Station. The New Haven to Boston (NHV-BOS) section of the Northeast Corridor dates back to the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad era, where it was and still is commonly referred to as the "Shore Line." Prior to January 2000 this was the only non-electrified section of the Northeast Corridor (NEC) meaning that northbound trains had to swap electric locomotives for diesel locomotives at New Haven and vice-versa. The NHV-BOS section of the NEC is the "most modern" section of the entire NEC as its catenary and signaling systems use the most up-to-date technology compared to the old PRR infrastructure on the New York to Washington section of the corridor. The New Haven to Boston section is the northernmost of the four main sections of the Northeast Corridor, which runs from Washington, D.C. to Boston, MA for a total of 453 miles. The NHV-BOS section of the NEC is arguably the most unique out of the four sections for several different reasons. For the entire 156 miles that the NHV-BOS line runs, it is mostly double-tracked in contrast to the rest of the NEC which is 3-4 tracks for most of its length. Secondly, it is the only section of the NEC where as of 2021 the Acela Express reaches its maximum service speed of 150 MPH on sections of track in Southern Massachusetts and Central Rhode Island. Finally, the NHV-BOS section of the NEC is the only section of the NEC that currently has active Grade Crossings, with 11 of them located all in the southeastern portions of Connecticut in New London County. Although the NHV-BOS section of the NEC is very unique it is unfortunately plagued with several issues such as frequent sharp curves with severely restricted speed-limits and congestion due to it only having two tracks.
