Malbec. The French black grape now synonymous with #Argentina. Known for the “black wines of Cahors”, where it’s traditionally known as Côt. Grown in the Loire Valley, too. A part of many a Bordeaux blend the world over… But it’s Argentina that’s really gone to town with this variety. Plantings exploded by almost 350% between 1995 and 2018, and it now accounts for about a fifth of the national vineyard. The Andean foothills of Mendoza - the country’s fine-wine heartland - has become a loving home for Malbec, and Catena Zapata is perhaps its most tireless cheerleader. (On that note, the vino-curious community has cause to cheer as Dr Laura Catena has just been named honorary president of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.) Anyway, Ed Merrison of Vininspo! finds this 2019 Catena High Mountains Vines Malbec a nice glimpse into the soul of this Argentine star.
