River Mersey Tidal Bore March 2014

The opening shots were taken from the West Bank in Widnes, Cheshire, near the famous road bridge. The bore came in on the main channel cut by the river. It carried on under the rail and road bridges. After filming here, I drove to 'The Ferry Tavern' which is located on the banks of the Mersey near the Fiddler's Ferry power station. It took 13 minutes to drive there, and an hour for the bore to arrive from Widnes. For some reason the bore diminished so much in this stretch of river that I almost missed it! As can be seen on the video, there was no wave across the river, only up against the river bank. I then made a 10 minute drive to Forrest Way Bridge and was just in time to see the bore coming down the river and under the bridge. It was a much more established bore with a good wave front. Unfortunately my video tape ran out so I was unable to capture the bore racing off towards Warrington town centre :-( Date: 2nd March 2014 Expected high tide at Liverpool (Gladstone Dock) was 10.14m at 11:42. There was a strong Northerly wind. The bore passed under Widnes Road Bridge at 09:58, passed the Ferry Tavern at 10:58, then under the Forrest Road Bridge at 11:15. The largest wave I saw appeared as the bore travelled through the river channel at Widnes, and was approximately 2.5ft (76cm) high.
